COPD (emphysema)

Coughing

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a lung and airways disease which is very common – but under-diagnosed and under-treated.

One in seven Australians over the age of 40 have airflow limitation of their lungs and COPD is the second leading cause of avoidable hospital admissions.

However, the disease can be easily diagnosed through a spirometry test, which can be taken at no charge to the patient at Peninsula Health through bulk-billing.

Early diagnosis can help prevent long-term issues such as worsening emphysema, which can be very debilitating.

Symptoms of COPD include shortness of breath on exertion, chronic productive or phlegmy cough, and recurrent chest infections. Anyone experiencing these symptoms is encouraged to see their GP as soon as possible.
